Description

Flat L-shaped object of iron with five nail holes in the longer arm, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium)

Use

The short leg of the piece would have rested on the ground, with a similar leg, now missing, on the other side. A similar piece would have been parallel to this one, with metal cross pieces fastening through the nail holes.

Context

Iron was widely used by the Romans for tools, weapons and fittings. Blacksmiths made a wide range of objects, using tools not that different from those in use today. The ironwork at Newstead is particularly well preserved.
