Description

Bolt of iron, with conical head and a perforated expansion in the centre, from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium)

Use

Bolts were used to fasten two objects (in most cases pieces of wood) together.

Context

The bolt predates the screw, and would have been used by the Romans as something stronger than a normal nail.
