Römer und Franken in Krefeld-Gellep (Romans and Franks in Krefeld-Gellep)

Name/Title

Römer und Franken in Krefeld-Gellep (Romans and Franks in Krefeld-Gellep)

Description

In Gellep, a farming village belonging to Krefeld, there was a Roman fort called Gelduba, which existed from the 1st to the 5th century. Excavations have revealed parts of its fortifications and interior structures, as well as the associated civilian settlement. The burial grounds have been researched for more than 50 years. Surprisingly, it was found that their occupation did not cease with the end of Roman rule around the middle of the 5th century, but continued continuously into the Frankish period. A highlight was the discovery in 1962 of a completely undisturbed Frankish princely grave from the early 6th century. Around 5,000 graves, many with rich grave goods, have been uncovered so far. This book provides an overview of the results of a long-standing, unusually successful archaeological undertaking.
