Brass junction loop from the Roman site at Newstead (Trimontium), 80 - 100 AD

Use

Junction loops would ensure the reigns of the horse would not get tangled.

Context

Trimontium was a military fort, mainly comprised of cavalry forces. Numerous artefacts relating to horses, such as their harness, were found at the site.
