Römische Weihealtäre im Kontext (Roman Altars in Context)Description
Roman Altars in Context reports on a Conference in Cologne from 3 to 5 December 2009 "Altars in Temples and Sanctuaries": organized by the Romano-Germanic Museum of the City of Cologne and the Rome Department of the German Archaeological Institute.
In Roman antiquity, altars made of stone, but also of wood or metal, were offered to the gods in a ritual act. These votive offerings were often placed close together. Votive altars were truly mass-produced, whose multitude and uniformity are puzzling from today's perspective. Roman Altars in Context explores why religious figures chose to erect votive altars, both in terms of the written, iconographic, and spatial context, as well as the situational and social context.Lexicon
