Vessel of coarse black ware, with soot adhering to sides, from the Roman site at Newstead. Lattice incised decoration. In several parts reconstructed with modern restorations

May have been used as a cooking pot due to the charcoal/burning around the rim of the vessel.

Context

Most likely from the first century /early part of the forts occupation due to the material used and the style.

These pots were used by the soldiers. They are quite basic in comparison to the fine glass and decorated red ceramics (Samian ware) used by officers at the fort.
