Description

Roman intaglio of a satyr under a tree playing the double pipes. An eviscerated hare hangs from the tree behind the satyr. 2nd century.

Use

Intaglios were used for a variety of purposes, including fashion, status symbol, and as identification seal or signet.

Context

Numerous intaglios were found at Trimontium, both during James Curle's excavations (1905-1911) and throughout the years by local field-walkers.
