Note
Designed by James Longarce in 1866 to picture a shield and leaf motif reminiscent of the two cent coin. A massive amount of these new “nickels” were produced in its first year or production in order to promote the new coin and because there was a higher availability of nickel and coin as opposed to silver. This combined with the rise in popularity of the nickel made the silver half dime fall in use. The design of the five cent coin went through many evolutions as there were consistent striking problems resulting in inconsistent rays and die cracks.
