Folding fans are associated with art and literature.
During the 5th century, Japan is known for originating and making folding fans.
Folding fans are thought to have been sold to Spain and Portugal in the 16th century. Spain was the only country to manufacture folding fans until the 17th century. The popularity of folding fans later spread throughout Europe. Deagan, K. (2002).
