Research Notes

Notes

Crude, "speckled" finish due to salt glaze slip technique. Blob finish on neck. "B Nilm:115" beneath the handle identifies the initial of the maker (B) and the bottle number (Num:115.) SELTERS seal and HERZOGTHUM NASSAU embossing indicate contents and manufacturer. Contained mineral water ("selters", or seltzer) imported from a spring in the Dutchy of Nassau in Hesse, Germany. Other examples found in 1840s California excavation, but none earlier. https://sha.org/bottle/finishstyles2.htm https://apps.jefpat.maryland.gov/diagnostic/ColonialCeramics/Colonial%20Ware%20Descriptions/English-Brown.html https://apps.jefpat.maryland.gov/diagnostic/ColonialCeramics/ColonialWare-thumbnails/English_Brown_images.htm https://openrivers.lib.umn.edu/article/the-story-behind-a-nassau-bottle-excavated-at-historic-fort-snelling/ https://ceramica-ch.ch/en/glossary/marks-pottery-marks/#q=*%3A*
