Note
Clay marbles were mass produced in the late 19th century through the early 20th century in the U.S. and Germany. Some were made with rough brown, grey, tan, or red clay, while others were dyed a range of colors or glazed.
The introduction of mass produced clay marbles meant that these child toys could be easier assessed. Due to the increase in commonality, these types of marbles were called “commies”.
Many clay marbles were also handmade in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors.
