Notes

One of the biggest toy manufacturers in the 19th century, Germany led the world in producing and distributing children's toy until the advent of World War I. This attribution is supported by the fact that one of the most common terms used to describe marbles in Southern Louisiana at this time, "Canique", is Germanic in origin.
