Note
Beginning in the late eighteenth century, pipes were made from fine clays without any obvious inclusions. Stems were made thinner and varied in length compared to previous designs. These clay pipes sometimes were oval in cross section and could be curved. Stamped marks were typically oriented along the stem in the West Midlands and the North West as opposed to moulded marks in other regions. During the nineteenth century moulded marks became the most popular and widespread of markings.
