In the 19th century, the development and use of the syringe was a significant advancement in medical technology. The invention of the hypodermic syringe, fitted with a hollow needle attached to the barrel, allowed for precise delivery of medications directly into body tissue. Previous methods involved less effective acting through typical application or infestation.
The hypodermic syringe also revolutionized the field of anesthesia by allowing for direct injection which reduced discomfort during procedures. This type of syringe additionally led to advancements in immunization programs by introducing vaccines and extraction of blood samples.
Throughout the century, syringes continued to improve with the invention of interchangeable needles and glass barrels. The improvements in safety and efficiency allowed for the widespread adoption of syringes being used in the medical world and helped further advance the healthcare industry to today's standards.
