Description

Two views of the same crucible, a coarse earthenware vessel tempered with sand, graphite, or other material in order to withstand high heat or caustic chemical reaction. Crucibles are commonly associated with metal working, specifically assaying pure metals, but had a variety of purposes in antebellum contexts, associated with alchemy/chemistry, prospecting, and crime.
