Description

Fish Otolith Otoliths are part of the fish's inner ear, allowing fish to hear and sense vibrations in the water and providing a sense of balance so they may better navigate their surroundings. Otoliths grow throughout a fish's life by accumulating material on the outer surface around a core. Source: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/national/science-data/age-and-growth#:~:text=Otoliths

Notes

Fish otoliths are a very useful part of fish anatomy because it helps scientists identify age, growth, and even mortality. Determining an age of a fish by studying is similar to studying rings on trees. Otoliths are "the most commonly used structure for determining the age of fish" (Fisheries, N. (n.d.). Age and Growth. NOAA. https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/national/science-data/age-and-growth).
