Obituary:
Lt. Col. James H. Brakebill Jr. (Ret.), 92, of Frederick, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at Homewood at Crumland Farms Health Center. Born on Oct. 31, 1916, in Knoxville, Tenn., he was the son of the late James H. Brakebill Sr. and Mary (King) Brakebill. He was the husband of 75 years to Dorothy Lawhon Brakebill.
Lt. Col. Brakebill grew up in Knoxville. For several years, he held a supervisory position in a large industrial plant. He was commissioned a line officer in the U.S. Army Reserves and was ordered to active duty in the Army early in World War II. Serving in major battles in combat operations in Europe, he was awarded a number of battle medals. After the war, he was appointed a line officer of the U.S. Regular Army. He served numerous assignments in the United States, Europe, Mainland China and Southeast Asia. He was a member of the Army General Staff, Department of the Army, Joint and Combined Staffs, NATO and SEATO, together with command assignments of tank units. Following retirement at Fort Meade with over 30 years of service, he and his wife made their home in Frederick for more than 30 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, James H. Brakebill III and his wife, Mary, of Florida; grandchildren, Scott Brakebill and wife, Katy, of Woodsboro, John Brakebill and wife, Beth, of Towson and Lisa Brakebill of Frederick, and their mother, Barbara Brakebill; great-grandchildren, Kristy Brakebill, Tim Brakebill and wife, Chelsea, Amy Brakebill and Holly Brakebill; and great-great-grandchild, Benjamin Brakebill.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Homewood at Crumland Farms' Chapel, 7407 Willow Road, Frederick, with the Rev. Tommy Rogers officiating. Interment with full military honors will be at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at Arlington National Cemetery. All those wishing to attend may gather by 8:45 a.m. at the Fort Myer Chapel of the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.Made/Created
