Just had the opportunity to sit with the grandson of WWI veteran Nathan Doobrow. Nathan was a native of Russia and immigrated to the US prior to involvement in WWI.
I was able to procure his grandfathers dog tags as well as his helmet. To me, these two items are some of the most personal and intimate objects you could obtain from your time in service. Both worn daily-if only they could talk.
According to transportation papers, he left Hoboken, NJ aboard the Powhatan on April 30, 1918 with the 35th Engineers. He served overseas from May 1, 1918 until August 17, 1919 in France and Russia.
What makes this unique, is he served as an Interpreter for the North Russian Transportation Corps during operations with the Murman Railway between April 17, 1919 to July 13, 1919.
From my limited understanding, this was a very rough time for that operation. Troops were under constant attack while attempting to repair the railroad for mass evacuation of North Russia.Create Date
