“At the age of 18 years he enlisted in the Army in December 1927 and was assigned to a battery of horse-drawn Field Artillery at Fort Riley, Kansas.
He qualified as an expert artillery gunner and an expert with the Colt .45 pistol. After about ten months of service, he was asked to volunteer for duty that required working most of the night. He was promoted to private first class and one month later, he was promoted to corporal and 18 months later, to sergeant. He requested to attend a preparatory school to compete for one of the limited West Point nominations for enlisted men. On July 1, 1931, three years after his enlistment, Joe was admitted to the United States Military Academy.
After graduation he received his commission in the Infantry with a rifle company. After serving four years as an Infantry Lieutenant and attending The Infantry School, he was sent to the Army Finance School.
During World War II, he was the Finance Officer of the 6th Armored Division, participated in five campaigns and was awarded two Bronze Stars and the French Croix de Guerre. From September 1950 to October 1951 he was with the X Corps Headquarters in Korea and he participated in six campaigns, including amphibious landings at Inchon and Wonsan and the amphibious withdrawal at Hungnam. He received the Legion of Merit, a South Korean medal and a United Nations medal. In 1951 while in Korea, he was promoted to Colonel.”
