During the investigation phase of research, it was found that John C. Unger served aboard the USS LCI (L) 512. It was also found that the USS LCI 512 assisted with the D-Day Invasion. It can be inferred that Machinist Mate Unger was aboard the USS LCI 512 during its participation in D-Day. It appears from Navy Muster Roll that Mr. Unger was aboard the LCI 512 after basic training in 1943 and it is shown that he was aboard the LCI 512 until December of 1944 when the ship was transferred to the British Government.
An April 1944 War Diary page (attached), shows that LCI 512 participated in a SMASH III exercise simulating beach assault with Army units at Studland Beach. It appears that preparation for D-Day continued until late May. LCI 512 was landed at Gold Beach as part of the US 11th Amphibious Force, Division 62- Force G. Division 62 assisted with the British Landing at Gold Beach. Service information post December 1944 is unknown without a record pull.
