Description

Lloyd Birmingham of 23 West Frack Street, Frackville, Pa joined the United States Army on September 16, 1940. This Bible, given to him on June 23, 1942 at the Trinity Church is undoubtedly a witness to his lengthy service with Battery F, 213th Coast Artillery. The 213th CA was an Allentown-Pennsylvania based unit with the National Guard. Prior to overseas deployment, Mr. Birmingham was stationed at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island as part of the Anti-Aircraft Defenses for New York City. It is likely that this was given to him prior to leaving for deployment training. Inside of the pocket Bible, are three locks of hair. In my opinion, the locks of hair serve as a remembrance to who he had left behind. On September 23, 1942, Mr. Birmingham departed for overseas deployment where he served until July 7, 1945. The 213th Coast Artillery saw action against the German Army during the invasion of North Africa at Casablanca on November 11, 1942, Algeria on March 27, 1943 and Tunisia June 27, 1943. In September of 1943, the 213th moved to Italy and eventually Corsica. On July 11, 1945, he was separated from active duty at Fort Indiantown Gap. He returned to his wife, Dora Birmingham and his parents Ethel and Joseph. Lloyd passed away on May 2, 2007 and Dora on September 12, 2000. Both are buried together at Schuylkill Memorial Park.
