Description

Staff Sergeant Raymond I. Royer ASN: 33365501 Enlisted: April 28, 1942 Place of Induction: New Cumberland, PA. Raymond Royer was born on April 16, 1918 in Lancaster, Pa. He received his initial Radio Operator diploma as part of Class 44 at the Army Air Forces Technical School at Scott Field, Illinois on September 30, 1942. S/Sgt. Royer was deployed overseas with the 48th Transport Squadron/14th Transport Group serving with the Air Transport Command. He was credited with over 1,800 flight hours over Africa and the Mediterranean area. In which, he flew as a Radio Operator in various models of C-46’s, C-47’s, C-52’s, C-53’s, C-54’s and C-57’s. All of his missions and flight hours are outlined in the Individual Flight Records included with his items. S/Sgt. Royer kept a log (see photos) of dates and locations of where he flew. These include, Cairo, Casablanca, Algiers, Oran, Tunis, Naples, Gibraltar, Tindouf, Attar, Benghazi, Dakar, Rabat and Poro Leyote. Raymond married Edna Hornberger who served as an Ambulance Driver at Fletcher General Hospital, Cambridge, Ohio. Edna joined the service in December 1942 and recieved her basic training at Daytona Beach, Florida. She went on to serve in the Motor Corps for 11 months at Camp Campbell, Kentucky before transferring to Fletcher General Hospital. All items were graciously donated to the Warren-Shay Military Collection by Raymond’s daughter.
