Walter Martin Mosier O-583425 Lieutenant Headquarters First Troop Carrier Command Retired as a Lt. Colonel with the US Air Force. Date of Birth: Place of Birth: Date of Death: Place of Death: Date of Enlistment: Place of Enlistment: Obituary: Lt. Colonel Walter M. Mosier, USAF Ret.Lt. Colonel Walter M. Mosier, USAF Ret., died May 10, 2005 at the age of 86. A Career Officer was born in Punxsutawney, PA, Sept. 9, 1918. When World War II started in Europe, he interrupted his college education to enlist in the AIR Force at Bolling Field Washington, DC. After training in Navigation and Electronic Engineering was assigned to the military Transport Service. He went to the Pacific division as a crew member. After the war was over, he was assigned to the Atlantic Division (MATS) as flight facilities officer. Soon after Russia blocked all roads to Berlin, ATLD was given the task of running the Berlin Airlift by President Truman. Walt's job was to install radar at three bases in Berlin for Air Traffic control. In 1952, he was assigned to Strategic Air Command. In his 17 years in SAC, he held many staff and command positions. Among them were Morocco, Tripoli and Germany. In England, he commanded the 485th Comm Etect Sq. The Squadron supporting 8th AF SAC at Westover. He also did a tour of duty in Vietnam where he was awarded the Staff Service Honor Medal first class by Premier KY. This was in recognition for building a Command and Control Post for the Vietnam Air Force. In addition to the above, he was given a Bronze Star and two Air Medals. His wife of 23 yrs. passed away and he was assigned to the 4th Air Division, Grand Forks, ND. He retired after 30 years of service. He married Ione Cariveau in 1982 and they moved to Walt's lake home on Leech Lake, Walker, MN. They were snowbirds to Green Valley for nine years and became permanent residents in 1999. They were active in Walker Community Church and later joined the Valley Presbyterian Church in Green Valley. Two brothers, Dr. Eugene Mosier and Woodrow Mosier, now deceased. Survived by his wife, Ione and three step-children; Susan (Steve) Fice, Woodbridge, VA; Randy (Kathy) Cariveau, Rapid City, SD; Craig Cariveau, Chaska, MN. Six step-grandchildren and three step-great grand children. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery. Send any memorials to Shriner's Hospital.
