Robert F. Fischer Sergeant ASN: 37270066 Airplane and Engine Mechanic 335th Bomb Squadron 95th Bomb Group 8th Air Force Stationed at Horham Airfield Station 119, Horham, Suffolk, England Mr. Fischer was born on May 25, 1916 in St. Paul Minnesota. He worked at Kisch Food Market prior to enlisting on April 25, 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Mr. Fischer recieved his Certificate of Technical Training on Curtis-Wright Aircraft in Glendale, California on September 25, 1942. He rated "Very Satisfactory" for inspection and maintenance, an Airplane Mechanics course. With this achievement, Mr. Fischer was able to inspect and maintain such things as the Airplane Structure, Hydraulic Systems, Airplane Engines, Instruments, propellers, oil systems and operational testing. On October 31, 1942, Pvt. Fischer graduated from the Flying Fortress School Factory Training Course which allowed him to do the same as listed above with B-17E's and B-17 F's. He was sent overseas as part of the 335th Bomb Squadron, 95th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. He was stationed at Horham Airfield Station 119 in England and maintaining aircraft there. While he was there, he worked on B17's such as the "Sweetheart of Seattle". His family graciously donated copies of supporting documents such as his certificates, copies of two photos, his discharge paper and the front page of his diary. It appears from the calendar on his diary that he took part in 40 missions to some capacity and took furlough in September of 1944. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with credited battles for Air Offensive Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, the Good Conduct Medal and the Distinguished Unit badge with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. Sgt. Fischer was a recipient of the Airplane Mechanics badge which accompanies his uniform. Sgt. Fischer was discharged at the convenience of the Government on September 25, 1945 at Camp McCoy Wisconsin with an ASR score of 108 This uniform was purchased on E-bay and the pictures were provided by family via email.
