Description

Staff Sergeant Calvin F. Curriden Company A 313th Engineer Combat Battalion 88th Infantry Division. Mr. Curriden received a battlefield commission to 2nd Lt. Effective November 14, 1944 and was twice awarded the bronze star for individual actions. He was also awarded the Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters. October 30, 1944 Citation 1 “For heroic achievement in action on 20 March 1944, in the vicinity of Russi, Italy. During an intense shelling of his platoon, during which a fellow soldier had been struck and rendered unconscious, SSGT. Curriden went to the aid of his fellow comrade and carried him 75 yards, through the area being constantly shelled, to a covered position.” October 30, 1944 Citation 2 “For heroic achievement in action on 8 July 1944, in the vicinity of Rossi, Italy and on 18 July 1944 in the back it off La Sorra, Italy. On the vicinity of Rossi, Italy, SSGT Curriden’s platoon was given the mission of clearing a road of mines. The area was in full view of the enemy and the parties were subjected to severe shelling from direct lay artillery. In the course of operations the Platoon Commander was wounded and evacuated. SSGT. Curriden assumed command, and braving the fire, visited each of the parties, giving aid where it was needed and encouraging the Men to further efforts in the face of the dangerous shelling. Again on 18 July 1944, in the vicinity of La Sorra, Italy, on a similar mission, the working party passed through the infantry outpost lines and began to clear a road that was under enemy observation. Heavy sniper and machine gun fire forced the party to seek cover. When he was sure that his men were safe, SSGT. Curriden crawled up towards the enemy under cover of a wall and deliberately exposed himself to their fire in an effort to ferret out their positions, and to advance on the enemy positions, being fired upon each time he became visible until the enemy was forced back by infantryman on their flanks.”
