Description

John Valentine Yarzebinski SN:895-81-36 Seaman First Class Wampum, Pennsylvania LCF-11 USS Algorab LCF-11 (Landing Craft-Flak) arrived at the transport area with the Gunfire Support Convoy as part of Gunfire Support Group O-1. Each LCF was responsible for towing an LCM. LCF-11 took place in the center just 700 yards off shore of Omaha Beach. Their position would give cover against low level air attacks. (Interestingly enough, the USS Arkansas was assigned to Gunfire Support Group O-1. I have the uniform to a seaman assigned to the USS Arkansas and was present during this period) He later transferred to the USS Algorab where he saw the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto between April 1-9, 1945. Yarzebinski also witnessed a kamikaze attack on the USS Algorab on April 6, 1945.
