Description

Company A 357th Infantry Regiment 90th Infantry Division Combat Infantryman’s Badge Private First Class Robert D. Reitzel of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Robert grew up at 523 West Walnut Street in Lancaster City. He was born July 24, 1914 in Salunga to then retired Colonel Quentin O. Reitzel and Edith V. Reitzel. His father served during World War 1 and led the first Pennsylvania troops against German Forces. Col. Quentin also served as a member of the Pennsylvania State Legislature and Former Register of Wills. Robert signed up for the Army on November 25, 1942 in Harrisburg. He attended basic training at Camp Barkley, Texas and was assigned to the 548th Quartermaster Depot Company. He was shipped overseas on March 23, 1944 and saw action in Europe against the German Army. At some point during his time in Rouen, France, he sent this box home. I’m unsure of what the contents may have been, but I can only assume it was some German loot. Robert was wounded in action June 11, 1944 just shortly after the D-Day invasion. He returned home December 24, 1945 and four days later was honorably discharged at Fort Indiantown Gap.
