Herman Dean Ulrich
SN:6607359
Torpedoman Third Class
USS Detroit
USS Catfish
Last available muster report shows him as being transferred on January 9, 1945 from the USS Detroit to Receiving Station, San Francisco For Further Assignment. At that time, the USS Detroit had been assigned as the Flag Ship for Service Squadron 6, operating in the forward area of the Central Pacific. While this was occurring, the USS Catfish was undergoing production, finishing work, contract torpedo trials and training in New London, Connecticut. The USS Catfish sailed from New London to Pearl Harbor, departing on May 4, 1945 arriving in PH, June 29, 1945. It is my assumption based on the documents that I have reviewed, that Herman was sent for further training on submarine work until his reassignment as an experience Torpedoman with the USS Catfish. It would also be safe to assume, that at that point in the war, with a new submarine, they wanted experienced torpedomen. It remained at Pearl Harbor until late July, completing their final training. The Catfish was then sent on her first war patrol on July 23, 1945 traveling through Guam arriving on August 13th. The cease fire was subsequently ordered on August 15, 1945 and on August 16th, the USS Catfish was ordered to the Yellow Sea for Surface Duty and Lifeguard Duty. In September, the USS Catfish was ordered back to Pearl Harbor and arrived just in time to participate in Navy Day. She spent two days on her assigned mission and inflicted no damage to the enemy.Condition
