A short explanation about the Wild Goose Center of Wisconsin is printed on it, also:
The "Marsh" is located to the southeast of Waupun, on Highway 49 and in both Dodge and Fond du Lac counties. The southern portion (10,857 acres) is state owned and is called the "Horicon Marsh Wildlife Area" or "State Area". The northern portion (20,796 acres) is Federal Government-owned and is known as the "Horicon National Wildlife Refuge" or "Federal Area".
With the reflooding of the marsh, the additional protection provided by the State and Federal Area, and the increased food supply resulting from the agricultrual programs instituted by the two agencies, the Canada goose poopulation made a remarkable increase in recent year, the peak population on the Federal Refuge risen to 450,000 amd more geese The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service opened 1,500 acres along the edge of the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge to public hunting in 1953. Hunting is no longer permitted in thid area.
PUBLIC USE: During the past decade public use of the refuge has increased tremendously. Hunters, fishermen, sightseers and students come from long distances for recreation and edcuation. All the State portion of the Refuge is open to fishermen and certain areas designated with signs, in the Federal Area. For sightseers, April, October and November are the best months to visit the Refuge to see the thousands of migrant Canada geese.
During the other months of the year, many other sights are available to the sighseer as wildlife is abundant in the Refuge. There are excellent places to study and photograph the many birds that like a marsh habitat. The white tailed deer also thrives on the marsh and are viewed frequently by sightseers. A favorite viewing place is Highway 49 just east of Waupun, where it crosses the northern part of Horicon Wildlife Refuge.Acquisition
