Indian Guest, Page 1
For Release June 25 P.M.
WAUPUN, Wis.---- The man whose slumped form on a tired horse was captured in plaster as The End of the Trail will be one of the more important visitors in the community which has adopted this statue as a trade-mark.
Waupun will be observing the 125th anniversary of its founding with a colorful Jubilee during the first four days of July. Although many and varied activities are planned, this six foot two inch, S7 year old Seneca Chief will be the center of attention for young and old alike.
It was more than half a century ago when Isaac Johnny John, better known as Chief John Big Tree, spent six months in the studios of sculptor James Earl Frazer as a model for the world famous End of the Trail statue and the now smoothly worn Indian head nickel.
Clarence A. Shaler, early Waupun industrialist whose own statues dot the community's parks, was so impressed with The End of the Trail at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915 that be had it cast in bronze and presented to Waupun. Since then the silhouette has been taken by the community as its official trademark.
Chief Big Tree will arrive July 1 to be the guest of The National Bank of Waupun during the Jubilee. Leonard Beske, public relations director of the bank, has announced a three day program which will satisfy photographers and coin collectors alike.
