CC2.46LG208.06Description
Collection of 92 artifacts, primarily .30-06 casings, from CC2.Use
Defensive site, patterning of .30-06 casings suggests a machine gun location. Unique casing included is .280 Ross, a Canadian sniper rifle round. Site absent of any .30-30 casings.Context
"This site is located to the west of Crooked Creek Gap in a saddle and up an adjacent ridge to the southwest of 46LG209. It has dimensions of 90 by 35 meters. A total of 153 artifacts were documented of the site, of which 117 were .30-06 casings. Nineteen (19) .30-06 clips were also documented.
This site has been partially destroyed by a recent gas access road. Artifacts have been found in the fill on the lower side of the road as well as one in-place shell casing across the road from the other artifacts.
We feel that this site may hold some keys to further interpretation of the Crooked Creek Gap area's involvement in the battle. It is likely too far from the gap itself for the defenders to direct accurate fire to that location. And the defenders direction of fire, given the slope of the land where the artifacts were found, is most likely to the north or northeast. This is toward 46LG211, where evidence exists for a breakthrough."
