A grist mill originally built in the mid-1700's. Originally owned by either Thomas Clark or James Fitzgerald the mill is purportedly the site of numerous meetings held by George Washington and his officers (in particular Israel Putnam) when the Continental Army was encamped in North Castle, it also provided a space where reports from soldiers monitoring Long Island Sound from nearby forts could pass on information to the main army. In 1860 the Pickhardt family took over the mill and converted it into a cigar factory.Collection
